GSA files a new lawsuit against Dragan Marković Palma, this time for compensation

Only a day after publishing of the final verdict of the Court of Appeal in Belgrade which determined that Dragan Marković Palma, MP in Serbian parliament and president of political party United Serbia (JS), committed severe form of discrimination against the LGBT population and forbade him from repeating the said discrimination, he sent an open letter today to the LGBT population, reported by numerous Serbian media, in which he again states a number of untruths about LGBT people, accusing them without any basis for various societal problems.

Court of Appeal gave the final verdict - Dragan Marković Palma guilty for discrimination of LGBT population

Belgrade, 11.07.2014.

Gay Straight Alliance (GSA; Alliance) announces that the Court of Appeal in Belgrade (Serbia) reversed the decision of First Basic Court in Belgrade and issued a final verdict upholding the appeal of GSA and confirms the discriminatory behavior, i.e. that Dragan Marković Palma, MP and President of the political party United Serbia (JS), committed serious form of discrimination of the LGBT population. In addition, the Court of Appeal has banned to the convicted to repeat performed discrimination and ordered him to pay court costs to plaintiff, i.e. Alliance in the amount of 57,300 dinars within 15 days of receipt of the verdict, under threat of execution.

Today on the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO), Gay Straight Alliance (GSA; Alliance) calls LGBT persons and all other citizens to mark this day by helping the most vulnerable citizens affected by floods in Serbia. Gay Straight Alliance (GSA; Alliance) announces that it has opened a contest for the “Rainbow” Award for the 2013/14. The award called “Rainbow” (“Duga” in Serbian language) was established by GSA and from the previous year it is awarded each May 17th on the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) for the contribution to the fight against homophobia and transphobia, and protection and promotion of LGBT rights in Serbia in the past year.

U.S. and EU ambassadors visited GSA and talked with activists

After the threats that were addressed to the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA; Alliance), this organization is visited today by the U.S. Ambassador in Belgrade, H.E. Michael Kirby, and the Head of EU Delegation in Serbia, H.E. Michael Davenport. During the talk with activists from GSA both ambassadors expressed their condemnation of the brutal death threats that were recently addressed to the members and leadership of the Alliance as well as the expectation that the institutions would quickly investigate the case and identify the perpetrators as well as the motive of these threats.
