Branko Ružić: The LGBT community has more supporters than they realise

Belgrade, 24.02.2014.

In an interview for the latest issue of the weekly “Vreme” Branko Ružić, a president of the Executive Committee of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and Minister without portfolio in charge of EU integration, mentions the LGBT community and says he doesn’t see a problem in advocating their rights and universal values that are part of a regulated world.  A team of a campaign “Your vote, your tomorrow” which is conducted by the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA; Alliance) asked Branko Ružić to tell something more about his attitude towards human rights of the LGBT community in Serbia and what are in his opinion priorities in this area.

Branko-Ruzic_foto-Medija-centar“The Serbian constitution guarantees the equality of all people. If we want Serbia to be a country for all of us, which will apply the rule of law, then we must ensure that LGBT people, as well as all other citizens of Serbia, enjoy all constitutional rights and rights guaranteed by international standards, especially considering the determination of the majority of our citizens who want Serbia to join EU”, Ružić stated.

He stressed that the issue of the position of LGBT people should not become an excuse for chasing votes in the pre-election period, but a concerted effort to eradicate violence and discrimination in Serbia, adding that „concrete actions to improve the status of women, Roma, ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, LGBT people and all who are vulnerable in our country, represent the only correct human rights policy“.

“Also, the LGBT community in Serbia should understand it has more supporters than they realise and that the Serbian authorities are much more prepared to cooperate in solving its problems than ever before”, Ružić concluded.

Gay Straight Alliance (GSA; Alliance) has started another campaign in this election cycle for the upcoming Serbian parliamentary elections – the new campaign is called “Your vote, your tomorrow“. The campaign’s goal is to make political parties and groups participating in the elections take a public stance on questions regarding human rights, including the rights of LGBT people, as well as to include these issues in their pre-election programmes and platforms, offering concrete solutions for reducing violence, discrimination and homophobia. Another aim of the campaign is to invite LGBT people, as well as their parents, relatives, friends and other citizens to vote for those political options which, among other things, advocate for improving the status of LGBT people, for equality and respect of human and minority rights.
Through various activities, GSA aims to offer LGBT people and all other citizens, a clear insight into the attitudes of all relevant political parties and coalitions, regarding LGBT human rights. GSA’s campaign “Your vote, your tomorrow“ will mostly take part on the Internet and through social networks, and all interested citizens will be able to follow the campaign on GSA’s website in the column Elections 2014 (, and on the social networks Facebook ( and Twitter (
