First year of awarding “Rainbow” – award for contributions to the fight against homophobia and transphobia

Belgrade, 09.04.2013.

Gay Straight Alliance (GSA; Alliance) would like to inform the public that this year we will start giving an award for contributions to the fight against homophobia and transphobia, and the protection and promotion of human rights of LGBT people in Serbia. The award named “Rainbow” (“Duga” in Serbian language) will be awarded every year on May 17th, which is the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO), for contributions in the previous year.

DUGA-nagrada-logo-1As an organization that monitors and analyses human rights of LGBT people in Serbia and on this issue follows the work of a number of institutions, organizations, media, political and social factors, etc., GSA believes that in recent years there has been some progress in improving the situation of LGBT people. Although the state and its institutions, LGBT organizations and the society as a whole still have a lot to do in order to reduce homophobia and transphobia and to achieve adequate standards of respect and protection of LGBT rights, there are a lot of people in various fields who are committed to these goals. GSA believes that its role, and the role of other organizations, includes, among other things, noting and observing positive actions and real progress when it is achieved and commending those who have contributed to it, which is why we have established the “Rainbow” Award.

Contest for the “Rainbow” Award for 2012/13 is public and anyone may participate if they have contributed, with their work, commitment, performance and results, to the reduction of homophobia and transphobia, to the protection and promotion of human rights of LGBT persons, to the improvement in the status and quality of life of LGBT people and to the promotion of equality and tolerance towards the LGBT community, in the period from 17 May 2012 to the date of the contest deadline. The contest deadline is 10 May 2013, and more on the contest requirements and nomination procedures can be found on a special web page

In addition, the winner will be chosen by an independent jury whose composition will be different each year and determined before the contest for the award is announced, and it will be composed of eminent and successful individuals from various fields, from the media, academia, national and international organizations, and so on. Besides GSA activists, every year, the panel will also include activists from various other LGBT rights organizations.

GSA is honoured to announce this year’s jury: Ms Dragana Nikolić Solomon, Head of the Media Department at the OSCE Mission to Serbia; Mr Ivan Cvejić, Editor in Chief of news agency Beta; Ms Jovana Gligorijević, journalist from weekly newspapers Vreme; Mr Milan Antonijević, Director of Lawyers’ Committee for Human Rights (YUCOM); Mr Dušan Maljković, President of Centre for Queer Studies (CKS); Mr Predrag Azdejković, President of Gay Lesbian Info Centre (GLIC) and editor of gay magazine ”Optimist“, and Ms Mirjana Bogdanović, Executive Director of Gay Straight Alliance (GSA).
