Meeting between the Speaker of the Serbian Parliament and Gay Straight Alliance

At the meeting today with the delegation of Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), which was held in the Serbian Parliament, the Speaker of the Serbian Parliament – Slavica Đukić Dejanović – expressed great understanding of the problems which are daily met by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Serbia.

She condemned most severely violence and discrimination against GLBT people and supported the proposal by GSA to create a strategy for solving the status of GLBT population in Serbia, which would apply to all levels of government, as well as all spheres of society.

Slavica Đukić Dejanović particularly emphasised the need for raising the society’s awareness of these problems through education and through media as an efficacious method in the battle against homophobia.

The Speaker of the Serbian Parliament stated that violence must be comprehensively sanctioned, from verbal to physical violence, and there must not be any difference in these cases.

Slavica Đukić Dejanović also gave support to the Pride Parade and said that she would attend this event.

Gay Straight Alliance wishes to express deep gratitude to the Speaker of the Serbian Parliament for a very candid and meaningful conversation and for her perseverance in promoting human rights of the GLBT population in Serbia.
