Gay Straight Alliance met with Socialdemocratic Union and League of Socialdemocrats of Vojvodina

Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) received a high level of support from Socialdemocratic Union (SDU) and League of Socialdemocrats of Vojvodina (LSV) in the process of solving the status of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people in Serbia, and they have most severely condemned violence and discrimination against this population.

On Monday, 12 April 2010, at separate meetings in Belgrade and Novi Sad, GSA met with delegations of the Socialdemocratic Union and the League of Socialdemocrats of Vojvodina.

At the head of SDU’s delegation were the party president Žarko Korać, the chairman of the Executive board Srđan Kamperelić and the party vicepresident and general secretary of Socialdemocratic Youth Nina Živanović. LSV was represented by the party vicepresident Aleksandar Marton, MP Aleksandra Jerkov and vicepresident of the Parliament of AP Vojvodina Maja Sedlarević.

Both parties emphasised that only joint effort and cooperation between political parties, government institutions and GLBT community can lead to the changes in society and to the improvement of the status of GLBT people in Serbia.

Furthermore, LSV and SDU support the GSA’s campaign to open up a wider dialogue with political parties and government institutions, judging it to be a good way to include all important political factors in an issue which concerns the entire society and not just GLBT people.

SDU has given support to the Pride Parade, announcing that its functionaries will attend this event. LSV has also supported the Pride Parade, emphasising that they will always support efforts to exercise rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

GSA wishes to thank SDU and LSV for the continuity in their determined battle for respecting human rights of all discriminated groups in Serbia and for an excellent cooperation which GSA has established with these two parties in the process of solving the status of GLBT people.
